ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine challenges and prospect of the acquisition and application of ict to library services a case study of Ekiti State University. Specifically, the study aims to examine the major methods of acquisition adopted by libraries, find out the type of information communications technology resources libraries acquire most, assess the frequency of application of information communications technology in libraries and investigate the challenges of application of ICT to library services. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 30 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analyzed, the findings revealed that the major methods of acquisition adopted by these libraries is request processing,verification, ordering and reporting. Also, the type of information communications technology resources libraries acquire most is computer Technology; communication Technology; reprographic and micrographic and printing technology. Furthermore, the frequency of application of information communications technology in libraries is high. Lastly, the challenges of application of ICT to library services are preservation of electronic information resources, maintenance and security issues, training of users and general lack of awareness and commitment among library stakeholders. The study thereby recommend that budgetary allocations to the academic public and special libraries should be increased as this will enable them to purchase information resources that are most relevant to meeting the specific information needs of their clients in the most expedient manner. Funds that are meant for the acquisition of information resources in the libraries should be released on time by the parent institutions.
